Dr. Neal Goldberg details the importance of adapting the abdominoplasty procedure to suit the needs and goals of the individual and touches upon the growing prevalence of revisional surgery.
Scarsdale, NY—Many people believe that abdominoplasty, commonly called tummy tuck surgery, is only performed on mothers; however, there are a wide variety of patients that may benefit from this procedure, explains Scarsdale plastic surgeon Neal Goldberg, MD. A one-size-fits-all approach, he indicates, will not provide an optimal outcome for many individuals, including men and women who are seeking reduction of excess skin after bariatric surgery or dramatic weight loss. To assist the diversity of patients considering cosmetic enhancement, he says he customizes the procedure to achieve the best possible effect.
There are numerous abdominoplasty techniques available to address a broad array of concerns, Dr. Goldberg indicates, and liposuction can be included in the tummy tuck procedure to help contour the body for the smoothest, most appealing effect possible. He also says that the length and location of the scar can be customized to suit the patient, such as a smaller incision for thin patients and a longer, potentially circumferential incision for post-bariatric patients with excess skin on the stomach and back. Furthermore, he points out that repositioning the abdominal muscles to their former location can improve the quality of life for many people. “This is an operation that is almost as functional as it is cosmetic.” By utilizing a customized approach to tummy tuck surgery, he suggests that people often can see more comprehensive enhancement than with the standard abdominoplasty operation, typically leading to greater satisfaction after healing.
Another benefit of customizing tummy tuck surgery may be a reduction in the need for a revisional procedure, Dr. Goldberg continues. In the case where a patient is dissatisfied with the results of an abdominoplasty performed by another physician, he reveals that tummy tuck revision may be able to help them correct conditions, including residual excess skin and fat, poor belly button placement, conspicuous scar, and other issues. However, he notes that this typically will be a more complicated operation that could potentially be avoided if the individual seeks out a board-certified plastic surgeon with extensive abdominoplasty experience for the initial surgery.
Ultimately, tummy tuck surgery is a highly versatile and customizable procedure, according to Dr. Goldberg. Patients experiencing excess skin and fat, loose muscles, and other aesthetic and functional abdominal concerns may benefit from this operation, particularly if the treatment plan is individualized to suit their anatomic indicators and cosmetic goals, he affirms. “I can tailor this operation in a million different ways, depending on the patient’s need.”
